We use a Lakeshore 331 in our lab to gather temperature readings for an AFM. Until recently our temperature reading program worked without problems but recently, the serial communication is failing. I have tried various means establishing connection without any success. The character format is done according to the Manual: - Baud Rate: 9600 (same @ Instrument)
- Character Bits: 1 Start, 7 Data, 1 Parity, 1Stop
- Parity: odd
- Terminators: \r\n
So far I tried Putty, the LS Instrument Communication Utillity v1.1 and multiple self written programs to no avail, all three connect to other serial devices just fine. I have gone through the standart troubleshooting procedure in the manual (section 6.2.5) nothing worked. Is there anything else I can try? Is there anything special I have to do? Thanks in advance for any answers.

Basically from what you are telling me, it sounds like the RS232 Serial Interface circuit on the Model 331 has failed requiring the 331 to be returned to the factory for a repair. Before arranging a return for repair, make sure that nothing is connected to the GPIB Interface and that the cable between your computer and the 331 is the same as used when it worked. If nothing is connected and the cable has not been changed, you will need to contact the service department at Quantum Design - GMBH, our representative for Germany to request a return for repair. You can find their contact information on our web site at: www.lakeshore.com/about-us/Lake-Shore-Sales-Representatives or you can send them an email at: lakeshore-service@qd-europe.com

The problem seems to have fixed itself. I am not sure if I had any hand in solving it, but I set the Baud-Rate to 1200 before testing it one last time, I dont know if this resets anything internally, but it's accepting commands and answering prompts. The only thing thats strange is, that if I ask it *IDN? it sends a zero as its serial number. Other Lakeshore devices we have are sending a proper serial number.
Also thank you very much for the quick answer and the infos.
