Hello,
I am trying to get the LakeShore 625 to be controlled through a Serial (RS232 to USB) port. Both my NI MAX and the Lake Shore Instrument Communication Utility are able to identify the instrument (COM5 appears when plugged and disappears when unplugged).
Since the latter of the two programs has the setting pre-set (I choose Legacy Instruments option, though I have honestly tried all combination of settings), I figured that one has the most chance of succeeding. Later I want to get a LabVIEW program working with it.
Anyway for now the issue is a lack of response. Whenever I send *IDN? I get no response.
Any idea how to circumvent this issue?
Cheers, Wobzter

The first thing I would suspect is that you are not using the correct cable to connect your USB to RS232 adapter to the Model 625.
The Model 625 as well as the RS232 adapter are considered Data Terminal Equipment (DTE), therefore the transmit and receive signals are on the same pins. This requires that you use a Serial NULL Modem cable to connect the two devices. A NULL Model cable reverses Pins 2 & 3 which are the transmit and receive signal pins and does some additional strapping of the RS232 control leads. I suggest you verify that the cable you are using has pins 2 & 3 reversed and pin 5 connected straight between the ends. If that is the case, let up know and we can do additional troubleshooting.

Hello Jeff,
Thank you for your very quick response. I ordered a Serial NULL modem cable, which is different from the one I had (US232R-500-BULK by FTDI Chip). Let's see if it works. I'll let you know once it arrives!
Cheers, Robbie
